Samsung NV (envy) 7 digital camera

7.2 megapixel camera with a one of a kind interface

Specs
The NV 7 is built around a 7.2 megapixel image sensor with optical picture stabilization and a 2.5 inch color TFT LCD display. Images are captured with a fixed, Schneider-Kreuznach Varioplan zoom lens (6.3-44.7mm, f2.8-f4.0, 38~270mm equivalent). It features optical picture stabilization as well as Advanced Shake Reduction, and TTL auto focus. The focusing range is Normal: 80cm ~ infinity (Wide), 2m ~ infinity (Tele) Macro: 10cm ~ 80cm (Wide), 60cm ~ 2m (Tele) Auto Macro: 10cm ~ Infinity (Wide), 60cm ~ Infinity (Tele) Super Macro: 1cm ~ 10cm.

It features a mechanical and electronic shutter with the following shutter speeds:

• Auto: 1 ~ 1/1,500 sec.
• Manual, S Mode: 15 ~ 1/1,500 sec.
• Night: 4 ~ 1/1,500 sec. 
• Fireworks: 4 sec.

ISO equivalent settings include auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1000. The flash modes include auto, auto & Red eye reduction, fill in flash, slow sync, and flash off. The flash range is 0.2m~5.8m at wide and 0.6m~4.0m tale. Recharge time is rated at 5 seconds. White Balance settings capabilities include auto, daylight, cloudy, fluorescent-H, fluorescent-L, tungsten, and custom. The camera also features voice recording capabilities of up to one hour, and 10 second voice memos attached to a still image.

The still image modes include Auto, program, A/S/M, ASR, Effect, and Scene. It features 11 scene modes, Night Scene, Portrait, Children, Landscape, Text Recognition, Sunset, Dawn, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach and Snow. Also featured are Continuous shooting, Single, Continuous, H. Continuous, AEB, and Motion Capture. There is a self timer with 2 second and 10 second timers, as well as a double self timer.

The NV7 can also capture MPEG-4 video at 640x480 or 320x240 with the 7X optical zoom function not affected. It captures video at 30 frames per second or 15 frames per second. There is also movie editing capabilities within the camera, so you can trim the movie in camera, and pause and resume shooting.

Software
The NV7 ships with the Samsung Digimax Master 1.0 software. This application enables you to organize and view your images, edit the images and videos you capture with the NV7, and more. You can combine the clips onto a storyboard, trim the videos, and apply effects and transitions to the clips. You can also add a narration track, music or audio track, and still images. The editing features of Digimax Master 1.0 include the capability to resize, crop, rotate/flip, add frames and edges, and make calendars. You can also adjust the lighting, hue/saturation, sharpness, blur, or use the auto image quality and auto clean features. Retouching tools include deformations, artistic effects, textures, rubber, and warp.

In Use
The Samsung NV7 is unlike any other camera in its class. In fact, there is no other camera like it in terms of design. It has a unique look to it, is built out of metal instead of the more common plastic, and retains clean and simplistic lines. The menuing system has been pulled out behind the four button curtain and is unique and easy to use. It has many features that set it apart from other cameras in its price range. Some of the cool features include the capability to adjust the RGB in camera before you take the shot; the built in photo frame function (nine in total) that enables you to create fun pictures with your subjects; and the composite shooting mode, which enables you to shoot an image with two views, three views, four views, and half views (top and bottom).

Three shots in one

The Advanced Shake Reduction (ASR) feature works fairly well especially when using the full zoom capabilities of the camera. When the camera is in full view, it is very difficult to hold the camera steady without seeing the shake in the LCD display. Despite the shaking, the camera compensates and can capture a fairly stable, blur free image.

If you are looking for a digital camera that is compact and will fit into your shirt pocket, this model is not it. Likewise, if you want a camera that has a lens that retracts into the body, you'll have to look elsewhere, perhaps the NV10 in Samsung's line. In all, the feature set to the NV7 is deep, yet accessing those features is very easy, thanks to its original, unique menuing interface. Highly Recommended.
